The new star in the racing team
Maarten got a taste of pigeon racing in his youth and became provincial novice champion in the province of East Flanders several times. For a while, pigeon racing was no longer the focus because his studies and later his job as a school principal were more important.
Nevertheless, Maarten stayed in touch with the sport as a reporter for the Herbots family and as a photographer of the national winners for PIPA. But as we all know, once the 'pigeon virus' is there, it never goes away and so there was a new start for Maarten in 2021. In order to be able to make the necessary investments, he specialized in pigeon photography in 2020. After a short time, “Columba Pigeon Photography” became known in the pigeon sport with customers in Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, England and even China.
The start
To form the basis of his stock, Maarten visited two breeders whose pigeons proved their quality year after year with top results in the difficult long distance. These fanciers were also always ready to give him good advice: Dirk Martens (Meigem|Deinze) and Hendrik Mortier (Sint-Kruis-Brugge).

In 2022, Maarten made his debut on the international flights. Agen and Narbonne were on the program for his yearlings. With these yearlings he became third champion heavy long distance yearlings in the club 'Denderbond Ninove'.
2023 - the year of the breakthrough
Through his first performances he proved that his management and his vision were the right ones. Where many of us dream of a national ace pigeon, he has already achieved it after three years. His BE-21-4221711 - Little Sonja ensured plenty of titles in the prize list.
- 6th national Narbonne against 5,000 pigeons
- 13th national Pau against 3,080 pigeons
- 68th national Agen against 7,331 pigeons
With these prizes they became:
- 1st national ace pigeon in the heavy long distance old pigeons KBDB.
- 1st place Belgian ace pigeon Marathon World's best pigeon FCI 2023
- 1st best European hen over 2 international races 2023
- 1st best European hen over 3 international races 2022 + 2023
Röhnfried products that he prefers to use
During the entire race, all racing pigeons are given Carni-Speed. The first drink given to the pigeons after the flight is Rotosal, in combination withBt-Amin forte andMumm. For the youngsters and the breeding pigeons,Avidress Plus is used all year round, except for the racing pigeons on the day they arrive from the race.
Individual preparation
Maarten plays his pigeons from the nest for the international flights. The racing pigeons that have to take part in the flights are individually supported in preparation for the flight with Blitz-Maxi-Kraft tablets and the Flugfit-Dragees . It is a must to provide them with all the necessary reserves and energy.
When they arrive home, the pigeons receive K+K Protein 3000 in their feed, which is moistened with Moorgold. This combination stands for rapid regeneration and has a positive effect on intestinal health.
During the racing season, the pigeons receive energy oil at least three times a week and the feed is supplemented with RO 200 conditioning powder is added 1-2 times in the middle of the week - the aim is to achieve a rapid increase in form. On the day of use there is Rotosal and when they come home there is always Bt-Amin forte in the drinker. This guarantees rapid regeneration. In addition, the pigeons receive Immunbooster and Entrobac in their feed. The next day, K+K Protein 3000 is added to this combination.
The brothers 62 and 111
The 1st and 2nd best year-old birds in RegV 455 2024 are even full brothers. Their father comes from Manfred Meyerholz's loft. Mother is the '31' who became 1st Ace Pigeon in June 2022 in the magazine 'Brieftaubensport International'.
